There have been bells in the Cathedral tower since the early part of the fifteenth century. Three of these mediaeval bells remain and one, St Nicholas, is rung for the daily services.
The History of The Bells
In 1892 the other old bells were melted down and a new peal of ten bells was provided. Two new bells were added in 1914 to make a complete ring of twelve bells. The tenor bell in this peal weighs almost two tons.
The addition in 1999 of a second Treble bell has made it possible to ring a lighter peal of ten bells. Named Gabriel, this bell was acquired largely through the generosity of the family of a local ringer, James Alan Cairns.
The Major Bell
The "Major" bell (on which the clock strikes the hours) was acquired in 1883 out of a bequest from Major Anderson. It measures nearly seven feet across and weighs 5 tons 18 cwt.
The Cathedral Guild of Change Ringers meet for practice regularly on Tuesday evenings from 7.00 pm, and ring before the Sunday 10.00 am and 6.00 pm services.
