From New Testament times, baptism has been the means by which individuals become members of the Church. Confirmation is a further rite, signifying full adult membership.
Historically, confirmation marked admission to Holy Communion, but some churches now admit baptised children before confirmation (after suitable preparation).
When Does It Take Place?
Baptisms take place at intervals through the year. Anyone wishing to be baptised should contact one of the cathedral clergy.
The annual Cathedral Confirmation takes place on Easter Day.
Confirmation classes are offered to youngsters in the period between Christmas and Easter, and to adults by arrangement. Classes are designed to give candidates a broad working knowledge of the Christian faith, and help them decide whether they want to go forward.
Requirements
The Bishop of Newcastle recommends ten as the minimum age for confirmation.
