The Cathedral Needlework Group

The Needlework Group meets on Wednesdays at 11.15 am to restore and conserve the Cathedral's textiles and to create new items.

Over the past few years we have been engaged in producing a set of banners for the Cathedral. Each banner is made up of three constituents; the main motiof, the lettering and the roundel at the base.

Fire
Fire represented by leaping flames in varying colours of orange and red.
I.H.S A monogram from the name Jesus formed by abbreviating the corresponding Greek word.
Roundel is a copy of the ship on one of the residentiary canon's copes.

Wind
Wind is represent by a swirl of movement in which is contained the dove of the holy Spirit of the baptised Jesus.
I.N.R.I Latin for 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.'
Roundel is a copy of the ship on the altar frontal of St George's Chapel.

Water
Water is represented by a sunburst of water with the dove of baptism. The water washes away our sin and renews us.
A.O Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end of all things: 'God's infinite and eternal nature'.
Roundel is a ship which reminds us of the connection of sailors and the sea with St Nicholas.

Earth
Earth is represented by the wheat and grapes grown to provide the bread and the wine of the Eucharist, the body and blood of Christ.
ECCE AGNUS DEI. Latin for 'Behold the Lamb of God'.
Roundel is the chalice withthe acrament of bread and wine.

Lantern Tower
This motif was chosen as the lantern tower is so very special to Newcastle Cathedral. It is an elegant spire which can be seen for miles.
St Nicholas Cathedral
Roundel is a copy of the oldest piece of glass in the Cathedral in the window in St Margaret's Chapel. The Virgin and Child
