The Cathedral Organ

The original organ in St Nicholas church was a Renatus Harris instrument of 1676.

This was replaced by a Grand Organ by T C Lewis begun in 1881, completed as a four-manual and dedicated in 1891, but contained within the Renatus Harris case, rearranged by the then Cathedral Architect R J Johnson.

Quality

Contemporary writers remark on the Diapasons as 'very fine', the Reeds and Mixtures 'exceptionally brilliant' and the flutes 'equal to those of Schultz', the voicing 'producing the best effects of the English, German and French Schools of Organ Building.'

More Details

The instrument was completely rebuilt in 1981 by Nicholson & Co. of Worcester, and given an additional (three-manual) mobile console. The current configuration of the organ is available as a .pdf file for download (coming soon).
