The Cathedral Consort

The Cathedral Consort was formed in October 2003 to provide another facet to the Cathedral’s Music Department and fulfil a need for a mixed choir singing sacred music within the liturgy to a high standard.

Members

The Consort is an auditioned group made up mainly of sixth formers, university students and ex-choristers.

The Consort works in two ways, either singing with the Layclerks of the Cathedral Choir (the professional backbone of music making at the Cathedral), or as an upper voices only choir regularly singing weekday and more occasionally weekend services.

Performances

In addition to its Cathedral commitments, the Consort has been involved in a number of performances with the Northern Sinfonia, including most recently a broadcast performance of Britten’s St Nicolas Cantata from the SAGE Gateshead.

Recordings

It has recently made its first commercial recording - The Gift, a Christmas Present from Newcastle Cathedral (available on the Regent label), singing with and alongside the Cathedral Choir.
